Have you heard about the Brightline Initiative? It’s a joint initiative between PMI and other “…global organizations dedicated to helping executives bridge the expensive and unproductive gap between strategy design and delivery.” I’ll let you read more about it on your own time. Today, I want to share a little bit about the Brightline course available on Coursera - Bridging the Gap between Strategy Design and Delivery. Let’s get to the important part, first. Like other Coursera classes, it is free, unless you want to pay for the certificate of completion, and it takes about 18 hours to complete. Eighteen free (or cheap) PDUs? I don’t mind if I do!
I should also note that you might learn something useful in the process.
Underlying the discussion and exploration of bridging the gap between strategy design and delivery is the topic of transformation. While the word transformation does seem a little overused, lately, I think that understanding and applying the Brightline guiding principles could be truly transformational for some companies. I’m not saying you should drop everything and strictly follow the guiding principles; some companies already have a process that works. But, if your company needs to improve its ability to execute, the following 10 principles are worth considering:
- Acknowledge that strategy delivery is just as important as strategy design.
- Accept that you’re accountable for delivering the strategy you designed.
- Dedicate and mobilize the right resources.
- Leverage insight on customers and competitors.
- Be bold, stay focused and keep it as simple as possible.
- Promote team engagement and effective cross-business cooperation.
- Demonstrate bias toward decision-making and own the decisions you make.
- Check ongoing initiatives before committing to new ones.
- Develop robust plans but allow for missteps — fail fast to learn fast.
- Celebrate success and recognize those who have done good work
Each week of the class provides you with the opportunity to study the guiding principles, consider case studies, and learn from industry experts and thought leaders. Even if you’re new to project management, you can come away with information that will help you as you grow in your project management career.
