Board Member Spotlight - VP of Outreach, Brian Kemper

My name is Brian Kemper and I'm excited for the opportunity to serve in the Board's Outreach efforts. My family and I have lived in Utah for four years now after nearly 21 years in the Army. In the Army I was entrusted to lead multi-function teams in Maryland, South Korea, Afghanistan and Hawaii. Many of the teams I led leveraged cutting-edge technology against national threats. I now work in the busy Utah construction business exclusively with work on Hill AFB. My wife works in digital marketing and when my three kids haven't been snowboarding in the endless winter they're relegated to prison, err, school life here in Harrisville. "Discovering" the project management tools and knowledge towards the end of my military career was exciting but I wish I had found them earlier, as to me, they are a great toolbox for life. It's this excitement that drives me to engage with others about our chapter.

Since attending the outstanding North American Leadership Institute Meeting (LIM) this last week I've developed some great ideas to put into motion in the coming months. Engagements with two school districts have begun and we are working to arrange presentations in the near future. We've made High Schools aware of the PMINUC scholarships available to Juniors and Seniors. Have you met our Education Outreach Director Kristin Dowd? At the LIM we got a great rundown on how partnership programs with college and university PM clubs can work. If you have a connection or are faculty at a local college or university, I'd love your help in forging new relationships to this end. The future is now and investing in the next generation of Project Managers is a great endeavor not to mention the fact that both the older and younger generations have much to learn from each other.

Within the Military Outreach front I've had the pleasure of meeting many folks transitioning from the military in recent months. We've discussed and reviewed resumes and the PMP application, discussed the transition process challenges and opportunities, and linked uniformed personnel up with civilians in career fields of interest to candidates. Fortunately, I've also been able to see them successfully land some great jobs after transitioning. If you have military friends new to PMINUC remind them that we have a discount guest pass for their membership, just have them reach out to me and I'll set them up. I'm linked up with the HAFB transition office (will be at the career fair on May 5th) and am planning to coordinate a PMINUC presence at Governor's Day on Camp Williams later this year. Networking & educational events will be planned and scheduled shortly, check our website calendar.  At LIM I've connected with Military Liaisons from multiple states, and we are referring our military contacts to one another. If you are or know a military affiliate and would like a military PM sponsor in another state just let me know and I'll connect you with your sponsor.
