In the Other News section of this week’s Friday Facts, you’ll find a link to our Personal Development page. On the page are several links to free Project Management classes. I had some spare time, so I decided to take one of them. I chose “Taming Bias: Using Wicked Problem Solving to Make Better Decisions and Align Teams.”
The class covered the following topics:
- Defining bias
- Steps to tame bias
- How to identify bias
- How to untangle bias
- How to resolve bias
As you’re probably aware, biases can “affect our perceptions” and “distort our conclusions.” The speakers also call them “mental shortcuts that can lead to poor decisions.” I was surprised to learn that there are at least 200 cognitive biases. Their point was that bias is bad and recognizing and resolving bias is good, but they also gave the impression that most or all of our thoughts, decisions, and actions are informed by bias. Wouldn’t this imply that, sometimes, bias can be good?
If you have an hour to spare and could use both a free PDU and some insight into accounting for bias in your decision-making, check it out.
