As members of the Salt Lake City community, our recent volunteer work at the Geraldine E. King Women's Resource Center with Volunteers of America has given us a unique opportunity to integrate ourselves and serve. This experience has not only impacted our perspective on project management and community service but has also allowed us to appreciate the blessings we often take for granted in our lives.

Located in the heart of Salt Lake City, the Women's Resource Center serves as a refuge for 200 women experiencing homelessness. Our time spent volunteering with the Volunteers of America and PMI Northern Utah Chapter has opened our eyes to the transformative power of small acts of kindness. It has reminded us of the critical human aspect in any project, emphasizing the need for cooperation and understanding, just as a well-executed project plan fosters community and support.

Our volunteer work at the Women's Resource Center has provided us with valuable insights into communication, adaptability, and the importance of empathy. Connecting with diverse individuals and responding to evolving needs has proven to be versatile assets, applicable both in managing a project team and in serving those in need.

Beyond providing food, our time at the WRC was about offering compassion, empathy, and a moment of dignity to those in need. As project managers, we have come to recognize the parallels between our professional roles and the selfless act of volunteering, understanding the profound impact of our efforts on individuals and communities alike.

This experience has reinforced the importance of integrating empathy into both our professional and personal lives. It has taught us that our ability to understand and uplift others may have long-reaching consequences that extend well beyond the scope of any project plan.  Let's continue to serve not only the goals outlined in our project charters but also the greater purpose of making a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
